Chinese Company Waives Siem Reap Airport Fees for Transport Drivers

SIEM REAP: The Chinese company that run the new Siem Reap International Airport has agreed to waive fees for transport drivers dropping off and picking up passengers. According to a January 11 press release form a government spokesperson, minivans up to seven seats will be permitted 15 minutes free-of-charge, while other vehicles will be allowed 30 minutes.

The decision was made following an outcry from airport transport drivers who were being charged a $3 fee to enter and exit the airport pick-up and drop-off points. For some tuktuk rides, this is 50% of the driver’s commission. Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered that a committee be established to resolve the issue led by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol and other relevant officials.

After DPM Sun Chanthol inspected the situation and met with the airport’s investment company on January 11, it was decided that entry fees for transport services would be waived with time restrictions on the vehicles. The company also agreed to reduce the general entrance fee through 2025, effective January 15, 2024.

An inter-ministerial commission was also established consisting of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation and local authorities to manage the road in relation to maintenance and safety.
